Mount St. Mary's College Implements Web-Only
Registration Using Jenzabar's Web Applications
CAMBRIDGE, MAApril 9, 2001Jenzabar, a
leading provider of Internet enterprise software, e-learning solutions,
and services to higher education, is pleased to announce that Mount
St. Mary's College (the Mount) has successfully launched its first
Web-only registration period using Jenzabar Web applications. "The
process is totally Web-basedour students are using their browser-based
Jenzabar email accounts to receive registration information and
are registering for classes using the Mount's implementation of
Jenzabar's Campus Web Product," stated Bobby Flack, Director of
IT for the Mount. "The process is going extremely wellwithin
the first day of registration, approximately 75% of the rising senior
class had completed their registration."
The new Web-based process relieves the administrators
of the burden of heavy data entry, allowing them to spend more time
monitoring the process and making decisions along the way. "The
Registrar's office can watch a class as it fills up and decide whether
to make adjustments, such as increasing the class size or adding
another section," said Flack.
Describing the advantages of Web-based registration
for students, Flack said, "We have given the power of making decisions
back to the students. Prior to the Web process, when classes filled
up, the Registrar's office had to decide what alternate classes
students could take. Using the Web, students now have the ability
to make their own choices." When registering via the Web, students
have course catalog and schedule information at their disposal,
including prerequisites and alternate class information.
The Mount adopted the Jenzabar portal as its official
communications vehicle in 2000 and upgraded its AS/400 platform
to newer, more advanced hardware and several Web-based modules.
Almost 100% of the full-time students currently have a Jenzabar
account, with identifications and passwords. Using these accounts,
students can change billing addresses, access unofficial transcripts,
view class information, and register for classes. "With Jenzabar
email hosting, students now have accounts for life, which will help
to keep them connected as alumni after they leave," Flack added.
Approximately 80% of the Mount's faculty have created
their own Jenzabar accounts, and many are posting syllabi and handouts
on the Web and conducting online chat sessions. "When faculty members
learned they did not need to know special languages such as HTML
to set up their Web pages, adoption grew quickly. In fact, many
faculty members require students to have accounts in order to access
posted class information," Flack said.
